Arthur is a text-book scaredy cat, yes, but it’s more than that - he has some (a lot) of anxiety problems, linking back to when he was still in school. He always (and still kind of does) worries about what people think of him and was bullied a lot. After he met Lewis and Vivi, everything seemed to click, and for a while it seemed that his anxiety in school and going to school had calmed down; not because of medicine or therapy, because Lewis and Vivi were there, and he knew that they would make things better.

He never really knew what to do with his life until Vivi brought up the paranormal investigations thing - it started out as a small club, and even though it was just Arthur, Lewis, and Vivi (a young Mystery was the non-human fourth member/mascot), they still participated in club culture events and had homecoming booths. They were recognized, but no one really took them seriously, even though Vivi put her motivation into the club for three years (seriously she worked so hard to get out there). Arthur was still surprised that even after high school, Lewis and Vivi loved Arthur enough to keep him around for more investigations.

They never really found anything paranormal, per se - the closest thing they came to strange and “out of this world” were rumors of sirens, but those were just jerks making fun of the choir club and their own club. However, in Junior year, they did find out one of their peers was a werewolf (what are you even expecting out of me) due to school newspaper rumors. So, that was fun, but the Gang made a promise with them that they’d keep it a secret. That gave Vivi more motivation to keep the Mystery Skulls club running even after high school, because there are more weird stuff like that!

...anyway, this is about Arthur. Right.

Arthur wasn’t really pressured into doing a “real job”, but after Vivi was like “HEY, LETS TRY AND GET PAID FOR DOING THIS” Arthur had to sit down and talk with her like “I don’t think this could pay our rent also the auto bill is big” and then he encouraged everyone else (except lewis bc restaurant. thing. so really just vivi) to go get some actual cash. Arthur was reminded about his dad’s mechanic thing and that it was near-ish to their place and also that he knew quite a bit about mechanics, so he applied there - and Vivi found a comic shop also near-ish and was like “MINE”

After the events of Lewis’s death, Arthur had a lot of guilt surrounding the cause of it. Even though he knows it wasn’t actually him and that he knows he was possessed, it was still his own body that pushed him. He felt proud after designing his mechanical arm, but he was still in a depressive slump. He just didn’t have it in him to tell Vivi about what actually happened, either, so that’s a huge weight on his shoulders. Arthur figures it’d be best to stay away from her for a while.

...but then, reports of a “haunted mansion” suddenly showing up a few years later. Vivi calls Arthur up right away, and they head down there - even though Arthur is confused as to why Vivi still wants to do stuff related to the Mystery Skulls Club. Here is when the events of Ghost happen. When Arthur finds out Lewis is still...semi-alive, he tries his best to keep him away from Vivi - but fails. The reason why he pulled Vivi out of the way in the video is that he wasn’t sure that Lewis had subconsciously sent in the backstory from the video like an intercom system and didn’t want Vivi to completely blow up. It probably isn’t until his anxiety starts eating at him again after the video is when he actually tells Vivi that he was the one who pushed Lewis down and that Mystery is some sort of 9-tails-fox ripoff.
